People to Watch

Leila Fernandes

Semiconductor Designer Hyderabad, India
Leila Fernandes

Leila Fernandes spent a decade in pharmaceutical manufacturing before founding Suture Bio, a biomanufacturing company that grows materials instead of machining them: fermentation-derived textiles, binders and packaging that replace petrochemical feedstocks.

Her argument is structural: every industrial revolution has been a materials revolution first, and the next one will be grown. In a sector crowded with pitch decks, Fernandes stands out for owning the hard part — the bioreactors, the yields, the unglamorous unit economics of making biology compete with petroleum on price.
